What Needed to Change
MedAxis operated a multi-department hospital where patient records were maintained in physical files that moved manually between OPD, pharmacy, and billing counters.
Doctors had no access to patient history during consultations without physically retrieving folders. Finance, pharmacy, and clinical teams operated in complete silos — a prescription written by a doctor required a human runner to reach the pharmacy. Billing errors were frequent due to manual charge compilation. The hospital had no telemedicine capability, losing a significant share of rural and follow-up patients who couldn't visit in person. Leadership had no dashboard visibility into bed occupancy, doctor utilization, or revenue per department.
How We Solved It
Brihat Infotech built a full-stack Hospital Management System (HMS) that unified patient data, clinical workflows, pharmacy, billing, and telemedicine under a single platform. The Unified Patient Record linked every patient encounter — OPD visits, lab reports, prescriptions, procedures, and billing — into a single longitudinal record accessible across departments in real time. The Telemedicine Module supported HD video consultations with end-to-end AES-256 encryption, digital prescription generation, and post-consultation follow-up scheduling. The Pharmacy Management System received digital prescriptions directly from doctors, maintained inventory with low-stock alerts and expiry tracking, and generated dispensing records linked to patient bills. The Digital Billing Engine auto-compiled charges from all departments — consultation fees, lab, pharmacy, procedures — and generated GST-compliant invoices. An Executive Dashboard provided real-time KPIs including bed occupancy, OPD queue length, doctor utilization rates, and daily revenue breakdown.

Lessons We're Taking Forward
Understand before you build
The most expensive engineering mistakes happen when teams skip the problem-understanding phase. We invest heavily in discovery before writing code.
Boring technology ships faster
Proven stacks with strong community support reduce debugging time significantly compared to bleeding-edge choices that look impressive on paper.
Operational excellence is a feature
Logging, alerting, and runbooks are not afterthoughts. They're the difference between a 3-hour outage and a 3-minute fix.
